Our 'Early Season Practice' weekend turned out to be a classic tour around Anglesey in lovely weather and great company. We chartered Christina from Boom Sailing and Steph was our skipper for most of it taking on some of the more challenging passages through the Swellies, across Caernafon bar and around South Stack.
Annette and Martin did much of the helming and Alan was cast adrift in the dinghy much to his delight. Clemmie also practiced some skippering including man-overboard drill in preparation for her Day Skipper course later in the year. 144 miles over 4 days and lots of smiles. This was the weekend of the Conwy River festival so the estuary was busy with boats and the bay had regattas taking place. We had a late start due to the tides and slowly worked our way against the tide over to Puffin Island where we anchored for a break. Steph then skippered us through the narrow gap into the Menai Straight and up to Beaumaris where we used a visitor mooring buoy from ABC marine. This time the sailing challenge was man-overboard under sail - which went remarkably well with 3 successful pickups.
Demolition Ball weekend
6 plucky geordie lads didn't know what they had bought at the charity dinner auction for a luxury weekend with Flamingo Yachts. Thanks to the generous offer from Flamingo Yachts of Largs we had a lively weekend aboard Skylark visiting Arran distillery and Portavadie Spa.
Huge credit to Sean, Andrew, Matt, Davie, Dickie and Craig for their humour, hospitality and strong stomachs in the face of some serious drinking. And some great sailing was had along the way - course record 8 knotts - not too shabby for complete novices. And many thanks also to Mags for keeping us safe as first mate.
Despite the strong winds we managed a challenging week aboard Sleat Odyssey from Skye yachts visiting Rum, Loch Scavaig, Isleornsay, Glenelg, Mallaig and Inverie with many memorable moments along the way.
Special mention to Sharon on her maiden voyage who kept a brave face and sense of humour in the challenging conditions (F8 a daily occurance!) Youtube highlights - here
